Mr. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, President, Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe
 
Mr Mevlüt Cavusoğlu was born in Alanya, Turkey and is the current president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. He is a founding member of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and member of Parliament for Antalya.

 
Mr Cavusoğlu graduated from Ankara University in 1988 with a BA in international relations. He has a master’s in economics from Long Island University, NY, and a doctorate from the London School of Economics
 
Mr Cavusoğlu joined the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in 2003. Prior to his election as president of the Assembly, in 2007, he was nominated chairperson of the Turkish delegation and a vice president of the Assembly. He also held the posts of chairperson of the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Population (2006- 08), chairperson of the Sub-Committee on Migration (2007-10) and chairperson of the Sub-Committee on Tourism Development of the Committee on Economic Affairs and Development (2004-06). From 2009-10 he was second vice chairperson of the European Democrat Group, as well as member of the Political Affairs Committee (2008-10), Monitoring Committee (2003-10) and Committee on Economic Affairs and Development (2003-06).
 
Mr. Cavusoğlu has authored the following reports: Commemorating the Victims of the Great Famine (Holodomor) in the Former USSR; Persons Unaccounted for as a Result of Armed Conflicts or Internal Violence in the Balkans; andThe Functioning of Democratic Institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina (coauthor).
 
In the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and Justice and Development Party (AK Party) he was chairperson of the Turkey-USA Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Caucus (2007-10), chairperson of the Turkey-Japan Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Caucus (2003-07) and vice chairperson of the AK Party’s Foreign Affairs Department (2001-09).
 
In the European Security and Defence Assembly, he was chairperson of the Turkish Delegation to the European Security and Defence Assembly (2007-10); member of the Standing Committee and Political Committee (2003-07) and member of the Turkish Delegation (2003-07).
 
Mr Cavusoğlu is married to Hülya Çavuşoğlu and has one daughter, İrem.
